As Murphy had recently announced, there are plenty of changes on the way for 2011, including doing more with our Community Media Lab and the possibility of making changes to our building to accommodate and encourage more community engagement.
We got in shortly after 10 a.m. and started taking a short tour around the offices with publisher Matt DeRienzo, who led us around the property and pointed out several of the features available on site.
Crowdsourcing a hostage situation using ChirpStory
Thursday was an unusually busy day for the news media in the Capital District, considering it was the day before Christmas Eve and most people were either already off work or checking out early for the three-day holiday.
Around 8 a.m. we got word of a hostage situation happening about 15 minutes away in downtown Albany. We sent a photographer and reporter down to cover what was happening from the scene and waited for news updates.
Unfortunately, the reporter forgot his netbook at home when he raced out to cover the story, but did manage to call in regular updates as police remained in a standoff with an armed man holding a woman hostage.
While we waited for further updates and photos from the scene, the magic of Twitter helped us keep up with what was going on down there as it happened. Read more »
A bit of an old school post today, but this is almost too interesting to ignore.
A former employee of The Record mailed us a 1937 style book that was used at the paper to dictate proper usage, spelling, etc...much like the AP Stylebook is used by every major news organization today.

Catch up: Moving forward with Journal Register Company
Welcome to the re-designed "Digital Future" blog. I've re-located to Blogger to simplify some of the headaches that I was getting using WordPress.com to try and include simple things like Javascript and to match the many other JRC staff sites out there in the blogosphere.
A lot has happened since the last time I blogged on the old site, so let me take a minute to catch you up.
The trophy is scheduled to make a stop here in early May and we're very excited to learn more of the details from the Giants as soon as we can. Photo-ops in our office/Community Media Lab would sure be cool.

All the commotion is about the opening of the paper's new building, dubbed "The Register Citizen Newsroom Cafe." The new layout has no walls between the newsroom and community areas designed to welcome the public in and become a part of every part of the news gathering/planning process. They even hold live-streamed news meetings each day at 4 p.m., which the public is encourage to participate in - both in person and online.
LIVE BLOG: Exit interview with Gov. David Paterson
On Wednesday, I will head out to the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle with Record editor Lisa Lewis to cover an "exit interview" with Gov. David Paterson, who will be making a stop at the newspaper to meet with upstate writers and editors.
It's great that the company's embrace of mobile technology allows us the freedom to do things like this more often now and help break the old models of print journalism that we've been a slave to for so long.
